What types of men's vests are there?

A men's vest is the sleeveless counterpart to a jacket: it warms the torso and leaves the arms free. At Tom Tailor you'll mainly find quilted vests and puffer vests – lightly padded styles that layer well over a jumper or under a jacket. They come with a stand-up collar or a plain collarless neckline, and some with a detachable hood. The vests here are sporty and functional, made for the transitional season.

How should a men's vest fit?

A vest should fit well at the shoulders: the shoulder seam ideally ends where your shoulder ends. On the body it may sit comfortably close, but shouldn't pull, since a jumper or sweatshirt is often worn underneath. It's therefore worth keeping in mind what you'll wear under it when trying one on. In length, a vest usually reaches just past the hips. What matters is that it allows enough freedom of movement and closes comfortably at the front.

What do you wear under a men's vest?

There's plenty you can wear under a vest, depending on temperature and occasion. For a sporty look, a hoodie or a sweatshirt works well; on cooler days a jumper adds extra warmth. It's a touch plainer with a long-sleeve top or a shirt. The sleeveless shape shows off the sleeves of whatever is worn underneath, which makes layering easy.

How do I care for a men's vest?

Padded quilted and puffer vests keep their shape longest if you treat them according to the care label. Many can be machine-washed at a low temperature; a gentle cycle and a mild detergent protect the fabric and filling. Close the zip before washing so nothing snags. When drying, it helps to shake the vest out now and then, so the filling spreads evenly and doesn't clump.
